Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Up to about a third of the $590 million U.N. fund spent for the Indian Ocean tsunami relief may have gone to pay for overhead.
The Financial Times says its two-month investigation showed the money appears to have been spent on administration, staff and related costs. The $590 million was part of the United Nation's $1.1 billion disaster flash appeal. The newspaper also found several U.N. agencies continue to refuse to disclose details of their relief expenditure in spite of earlier pledges of transparency by senior officials. The flash appeal covered the money donated by governments to the world body in the first weeks after the disaster to fund the early aid work, the Times reported. The newspaper said details of that appeal it obtained from U.N. agencies such as the World Health Organization and the World Food Program showed 18 percent to 32 percent of the expenditure related to staff, administration and other costs. Some agencies say non-profit aid organizations should claim no more than 10 percent of project funds for administration costs, the report said. |

| Old Soldier December 30, 2005 04:32 PM PST Happy New Year Skye! UN stands for Ulitmately Nothing. That's what you get when they get involved. It's time for their headquarters to move out of NYC to a more fitting city - preferrably Atlantis. | ||
| Dana December 29, 2005 06:56 PM PST The United Nations cannot be what its creators had hoped it would be; that is organizationally impossible. It vests main power in the General Assembly, where the most corrupt, most venal and most brutal nations have just as much of a voice and a vote as democracies, where the poor nations which can contribute nothing have just as much of a vote as the wealthy ones which sustain the organization. It's second center of power, the Security Council, can easily be hamstrung by a single Permanent Member. The sad fact is that the UN is organized on the principle of the lowest common denominator; we ought not to be surprised when that is exactly what we get out of it. Many professed to be shocked that John Bolton once said taht if the top ten floors of the UN building disappeared, no one would miss them. Trouble is, Mr Bolton was close to right; had he said the bottom ten floors, he'd have been exactly on target. | ||
| Robert December 29, 2005 01:32 PM PST Skye, having read Churchill's six volumes on WWII last year opened my eyes to how far the whole United Nations idea has been corrupted, and how it went down hill so fast and far. Churchill, of course, orginally used the 'UN' term to refer to the allies against the Axis, and the idea was that after the war was won the alliance (including the Soviets) would stay together, instead of being just a wartime one, and with the obvious overwhelming force available would prevent the kind of war and agression that had recently occurred. In other words, the Security Council, not the babble of the General Assembly and the corruption of the allied organizations and programs. What's needed, in my opinion, is a new organization where standards of conduct must be met to join. As in not murdering and torturing your own citizens. I don't think that's asking too much. Disband the UN and start fresh! | ||
| Monica-Philadelphia December 29, 2005 01:03 AM PST I am totally with you on this Skye. We are very careful about choosing the organizations where our (meager) donations end up. You HAVE to be! The UN needs to go. What will it take to make that happen? Criminy - they steal chickens from the cafeteria, they steal money, they refuse to be transparent and they never get a frigging parking ticket! Those are just the little things. I'm too exhausted to list the really BAD things they do... | ||
| Skye December 28, 2005 11:23 PM PST Hello Dcat! Welcome to a troll-free zone :) | ||
| Skye December 28, 2005 11:21 PM PST It is an endless source of amusement to me :) -------------------------------- Gee Skye, you sound pretty "right wing" on this one -- for a "liberal"! ;-) | ||
| Skye December 28, 2005 11:16 PM PST Wordsmith, Thanks for the link to Radioblogger. In short, Trump delivered his famous line to the UN: "You're Fired" Now if the UN would only comply! | ||
| Skye December 28, 2005 11:06 PM PST Troll, I haven't donated to a UN sponsored relief organization in recent years. Old clothing is donated to the Purple Heart. Donations of food and time are given to Aid for Friends. For several years myself and several family members have contributed to the Paralyzed Veterans of America (www.supportveterans.org) I am sure all the posters on this thread have similar charitable CV's. Given the choice of to whom I donate, I prefer a UN free charity. | ||
| dcat/still at it ® December 28, 2005 09:18 PM PST I will have to come back later and finish Skye. Hey you have a great year as well! Keep up the blogging! :) | ||
| The Troll December 28, 2005 03:52 PM PST Skye dont tell me you actually sent this pack of theives any money??? Give to the Salvation Army you'll be better represented. | ||
| Rob December 28, 2005 01:24 PM PST Gee Skye, you sound pretty "right wing" on this one -- for a "liberal"! ;-) The UN sets new standards -- for fraud, corruption, and hypocrisy! It is beyond "repair" and needs to be totally dismantled before it inflicts even more damage on the world community it was intended to serve. We (the United States) do neither ourselves nor others any favor by continuing to support this derelict organization with our funds and with providing it legitimacy by working through it in an attempt to achieve worthwhile objectives. It's time for the UN to go... | ||
| Wordsmith December 28, 2005 10:33 AM PST Skye, Hugh Hewitt replayed an audio clip on his program yesterday that really is a "must hear" on Donald Trump testifying regarding the UN wasteful spending. You can hear the audio clip by going to http://radioblogger.com/ Top of the page, under the poll. | ||
| RG December 28, 2005 04:41 AM PST After coffee's son was found to be on the take regarding coffe and Saddam's oil for food "program", I have since considered the UN the modern day Mafia. The big mob. | ||
| JM December 28, 2005 04:16 AM PST >If the UN was a charity (and it IS) >it would be disbanded and it's >leaders put in jail for theft. It should be anyway. | ||
| Mike\\\\\\\'s America December 28, 2005 02:31 AM PST I wonder what Jan Egeland did with the nearly $200 million for "overhead?" If the UN was a charity (and it IS) it would be disbanded and it's leaders put in jail for theft. | ||
